In the Studio: Laura Hetemäen Tarttuminen (eng. sticking)

In her artistic practice, Laura Hetemäki combines painting, drawing, linen weaving and observing intriguing objects.

”I had no idea where the cottony object lying on the street came from. Maybe it had fallen from somebody’s jacket, scarf or a hat. At first I walked past the soft material. After a while I returned and picked up the fluff. When I held it in my hand, I felt tenderness. There were brown dead leaf parts stuck to the greenish fluffy thing. I brought the fluffy thing to my studio, where it stayed forgotten among other items for a long time. Up until, months later, I found it stuck on the fringe of a handwoven linen fabric.”

Her painting motives come from daily life and memories of places from the past. The time within the paintings reaches somewhere beyond the grasp of clock hands. The exhibition at Studio Laikku combines both newer and older works.

Hetemäki graduated as a visual artist (BA) from Tampere University of Applied Sciences in 2012 and received her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2024. The exhibition features a recent publication based on Hetemäki's Master's thesis, Tarttuminen, in which she outlines her artistic practice by writing about events and activities connected to it. In it, she reflects on all the areas of life into which painting slithers.
